From Sofia: Rila Monastery and Optional Museum, Cave or Spa

1.Rila Monastery and Optional Museum, Cave or Spa

★★★★★★★★★★4.6 · 270 reviews · 8 - 9 hours · from $35Our pick

Spend 8 to 9 hours from Sofia visiting Rila Monastery in the Rila Mountains, then choose the National History Museum, monastery museum, Saint John’s Cave, or mineral hot springs. Guides such as Antonio, Toni, Ceco, and Yani are praised for clear English and helpful local advice.

“If you have some interest for Bulgarian culture and history, you must see both these places... and the bus & guide is perhaps the best option to reach them (particularly in case of mountain-located Rila Monastery). Both monastery and church are first-class monuments of Bulgarian Orthodox architecture and art. Must see.”

Once there, the ice museum was closed due to a temperature variance, so that was a total bust (and the refund received for this was laughable). At that point, we were simply released to go find lunch (one available restaurant), visit hot springs or otherwise entertain ourselves til 5pm when she…”
